We did spend the night at The Old Coach Inn, although I don’t know how much any of us slept. I dozed just prior to dawn, a shallow half-consciousness that was probably less restorative than staying awake. A knock at the door disrupted it at half-past seven. We chewed through breakfast, and I gulped down as much instant coffee as my stomach could tolerate before we packed our suitcases. Meryl and Ted came to say goodbye when they saw me loading luggage into the boot. It was cordial but uncomfortable chit-chat, akin to talking hungover with friends made while drunk. I was glad to get moving again and put the whole bizarre episode in our rear-view mirror. Once we were on the highway, I opened the armrest console and tossed in my fresh packet of cigarettes.
